New BMW 5 Series: Let's Review

For this new generation of Series 5, it seems that the firm has let go with the introduction of the new light hybridization technology at 48 V. And that for all four and six-cylinder engines. This technological solution offers faster responses and is more efficient thanks to the 48 V alternator starter capable of producing an excess of 11 horsepower. Alongside the traditional 184 hp BMW 520i, the 190 hp BMW 520d and the 286 hp BMW 530d, the brand offers a disruptive range of engines. These are rechargeable hybrid units. The BMW 530e combines a 4-cylinder 2-liter turbo petrol engine with 184 hp and 300 Nm of torque with an electric motor of 109 hp and 265 Nm of torque. The set produces the equivalent of 292 horsepower. What to send the 0 to 100 km / h in 5.9 seconds. BMW also offers this BMW 530e as an all-wheel-drive xDrive version and as a Touring station wagon.

Isn't that enough for you? Then the BMW 545e xDrive is made for you because it offers 394 guns. It must be said that its hybrid system is much stronger because it replaces the 4-cylinder with a 6 inline of 3 liters and 286 hp. The TOP 100 is completed in 4.7 seconds. For performance junkies, the overkill BMW M550i is always there. Its 4.4-liter V8 develops 530 horsepower for 750 Nm of torque. Power goes through all 4 wheels via the automatic transmission and drive. What explodes the 0 to 100 km / h in 3.8 seconds.

Upgraded version of Series 3

The big sister of the 3 Series passes, four years after its launch, through the restyling box. A clearly visible rejuvenation treatment accompanied by a revised range of engines and ... surprises. Still, this mid-career facelift brings a real novelty effect and also a change of perception. Rather than looking like a downsized 7 Series as before, the refreshed version now takes on the air of a big Series 3, a kinship evident when you take a look at the redesigned optics, with a black background and LED signature close (especially at the rear). The keenest "BMWists" will also note the now trapezoidal exhausts, hitherto reserved for the more muscular versions. The surprise effect is less on board, where there is still a new touch screen that goes from 8.8 to 10.25 inches as standard (12.3 inches optional) or even digital instrumentation that does not seek more to ape two round counters. For the rest, it is anecdotal since the changes mainly concern the layout of the steering wheel with new "multifunction" keys, but not tactile unlike those of its best competitors, the Mercedes E-Class.

A reduced engine range

BMW has, in part, built its reputation on its expertise as an engine manufacturer. In fact, it had been a tradition for a long time, each car in its range (except electric obviously) was offered with a very large pallet of blocks. The proof with the 5 Series, which here draws a line on the very large 540d diesel (320 hp) and the delusional M550d of 400 hp which had the particularity of being equipped with four turbos! The gasoline range does not escape this purge either with the 530i and 540i which also bow out. If the first with its four-cylinder 252 hp may be missed by those who found the 520i (184 hp) a bit tight, the withdrawal of the second sounds like the end of an era. Indeed, it means that the 5 Series abandons the six-cylinder in-line petrol, the mechanical architecture that has been, for many and for ages, the number 1 charm of a BMW.

But hybrid novelties

But fear not, this engine will be back as early as next fall ... in an unprecedented form. Indeed, the 545th will reinforce the plug-in hybrid range alongside the 530th (292 hp). It combines the 3.0 house, the six-cylinder in-line, with an electric motor, all developing 394 hp and 600 Nm of torque! What is compatible with good performance (0 to 100 km / h in 4.7 s) and electric "virtue" with an autonomy announced in zero-emissions mode exceeding 50 km. Note, however, that only the sedan will be available with this engine, also automatically associated with the xDrive all-wheel drive. The Touring station wagon will nevertheless finally be able to be connected too, but in version 530e only, in the fall of 2020, with even the possibility of choosing it with all-wheel drive and rear-wheel steering. Finally, note that all the survivors of the traditional range of engines (520i and 550i in gasoline, or 518d, 520d, and 530d in diesel) are now automatically associated with micro-hybridization with 48V electrical network and electric boost (8kW) coming from support the heat engine. BMW also says it has reworked the injections of its engines while the diesel now all adopts new double-stage turbos.

And a slightly improved endowment

The owners of smartphones running on Android will be able, and this is new, to directly connect their device in the Series 5 thanks to Android Auto, a possibility until now only offered if you had preferred to "bite the apple". BMW has also modernized the 5 Series with electronic aids (the famous ADAS) brought up to date, even if obviously, highway driving will only be semi-autonomous. Finally, the German sedan will be connected, thanks to a new version of the GPS with real-time traffic status and the possibility also for the manufacturer to operate remote updates.
