Chennai, the capital of Tamil Nadu, is known as the "Detroit of Asia" in the city's major automotive and related industries. It is counted as one of the top 10 automotive hubs in the world and is currently emerging as one of the largest automotive hubs in the world. Over the time period, many big names in vehicles and parts suppliers have chosen this place to set up an electric vehicle (EV) center that will supply about 4.5 million electric motorcycles over the coming five years. With an investment of more than Rs 13,500 cr, most of the factories are in the process to set up their units in Chennai and in the State.

Electric vehicle (EV) sales in Tamil Nadu are set to grow by 400% in 2021 due to an unprecedented rise in fuel prices despite having a lack of charging infrastructure across the state. As per the data and figures of the VAHAN group, up to 30,036 electric vehicles were registered in the state in 2021, compared to 5,696 registered electric vehicles in 2020, of which more than 97% were motorcycles. In 2019, there were 3,444 electric vehicles registered in Chennai which is a very less number as compared to 2021.

Electric vehicles adoption is hampered by a lack of sufficient public charging points. As per the Department of Energy, there are 94 public charging stations in TamilNadu. Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL), a subsidiary of the Department of Energy, takes charge of eight public charging stations installed at Chennai Metro Station.

650 electric vehicle charging stations will install on national highways in Tamil Nadu

Tamil Nadu plans to install more than 650 electric vehicle charging stations on the state's national highways. These national highways connect Chennai with other cities such as Nagpur, Bhubaneswar, and Trivandrum. The government of Tamil Nadu believed the fact that electric vehicle sales will be boosted by expanding the state's charging infrastructure. There are currently 45,300 electric vehicles in Tamil Nadu, due to which Tamil Nadu emerged as the seventh-largest vehicle state in the country. These charging stations will take about 4-8 hours to fully charge an electric car. But with the help of future batteries and fast charging technology, this could be reduced to 20 minutes. Overall EV sales have increased slightly, but poor charging infrastructure remains a barrier. To date, the Tamil Nadu Electric Vehicle FAME plan in India has not built a single public charging station to use government funds. In the second phase of the FAME scheme, the Union Ministry of Heavy Industry currently allows only 651 charging items in Tamil Nadu.
